What is EMDR therapy?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured form of psychotherapy that may help people work through traumatic experiences and distressing memories. EMDR is frequently used in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related distress.

EMDR treatment includes preparation and assessment, followed by carefully guided processing of selected experiences. During certain phases, a therapist may use bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements, taps, or sounds—as part of the protocol.

The goal is not to erase memories. It's to help reduce the distress connected to them and support more adaptive ways of understanding past experiences.

What might EMDR help with?

  • Distressing memories and trauma-related symptoms
  • Experiences that continue to trigger intense emotional reactions
  • Negative beliefs about yourself connected to past events
  • Trauma-related anxiety, fear, or avoidance

What should I expect?

We would first spend time understanding your concerns, history, coping resources, and goals. EMDR is a phased treatment that includes preparation and stabilization; processing begins only after we agree it is clinically appropriate.

You do not have to share every detail of a traumatic experience to begin discussing whether EMDR might be helpful. Your readiness, preferences, and emotional safety guide the process.
